Curriculum

A Flexible Curriculum to Fit Your Needs

Our Post-Baccalaureate Premedical program enables qualified college graduates to take core and elective science and math courses that satisfy admission requirements for allopathic and osteopathic medicine, dentistry, podiatry, veterinary medicine, physical therapy, physician assistant, and other professional programs. We also offer biochemistry and a full range of mathematics and behavioral science courses to aid students in preparing for the MCAT.

The program is flexible to support students who need prerequisites, those who have completed most or all those prerequisites but need additional preparation, and students who wish to improve their academic record to become a more competitive professional school applicant.

Our advisors can help you develop an individual plan customized to your needs. It is possible to repeat prerequisite courses if needed; we work with each student individually to determine whether a core course should be repeated based on the student’s goals, mastery of the material, and length of time since the course was taken initially. Each student’s program is individually tailored and may include both core courses and electives.

Linkage Programs

Are You Considering a Linkage Program? At WashU, we have established special connections, known as Linkage Programs, with prestigious medical schools such as Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and the University of Michigan Medical School. These collaborations provide a unique opportunity for aspiring medical students to gain admission to a specific medical school while reducing their timeline by one year.

Tuition & Fees

Tuition for the Post-baccalaureate Premedical (PBPM) program is based on the number of credits you take each semester. Most students in the program average 3 courses, or 9 units, per semester. Charges are applied to your student account where you can choose to pay directly online via a checking or savings account or with a credit card. Our Financial Aid team can also work with you to identify the best financial aid package to help support you through your PBPM program studies.

During the Fall and Spring semesters, students pay $925/credit for courses designed for the PBPM program. In the summer, the course rate varies from $735/credit - $1,220/credit depending on the academic division offering the course. Note that some courses require an additional lab fee. We recommend you plan for $1,000/semester for books and incidentals

Financial Assistance

Students who are admitted to the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program and registered at least half-time are eligible for financial assistance, provided they meet satisfactory academic progress standards. Financial assistance will be calculated and awarded at the undergraduate funding level.

To apply for financial assistance, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as a 5th year undergraduate. Upon receiving the completed FAFSA, Student Financial Services (SFS) will create a financial assistance offer which may consist of federal and/or institutional loans.

There are two types of federal loans that may be available to students in the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program. The Federal Direct Subsidized Loan and the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan may be offered to students who have completed a FAFSA and have remaining undergraduate federal loan eligibility. It is recommended that students who have borrowed federal loans in the past visit and review their loan history to best understand their remaining eligibility for undergraduate federal loans.

In addition to federal loans, students may opt to borrow a Washington University Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Loan. This loan is offered to students who may need some additional loan assistance in order to meet educational expenses. The WashU Loan offers a competitive interest rate, is subsidized while the student is enrolled in the program, and can be deferred upon successful full-time enrollment in graduate or professional school program. The WashU Loan will be provided as part of the overall financial assistance offer for students in the program with a completed FAFSA. There is not a separate application required.

For more information about completing the FAFSA, please see the Student Financial Services website. If you have additional questions regarding financial aid in the PBPM program, please contact Anita Radcliffe in Student Financial Services at anita_radcliffe@wustl.edu or 1-314-935-4482.

For students interested in applying for Financial Assistance for the summer semester, the application can be found here

Scholarships

We award two special scholarships that provide $5,000 toward tuition for one academic year for qualified applicants. Both scholarships are renewable for a second year if the recipient remains in good academic standing.

James L. Sweatt Scholarship -  intended to foster a diverse educational atmosphere in the PBPM program.
Gertrude H. Hast Scholarship - for Indiana residents to enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical program.

Health Insurance

All students in the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical program are automatically enrolled in Washington University's basic student health insurance plan unless proof of comparable coverage is provided. Additionally, the policy may be purchased for dependents. The 2024-2025 annual student cost for this policy is $2,580 and the deadline to waive out of the plan is September 5, 2024. All students in the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical program will be charged a Health and Wellness fee of $323 per semester each fall and spring, regardless of the health insurance plan they have.

Students admitted to the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical program who take a medical leave of absence must do so according to the requirements and procedures of Washington University Student Health Services. A student may take no more than two semesters of a medical leave of absence from the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical program. A written statement from Student Health Services concerning readiness to return, along with the student's written request for reinstatement, is required in order to be eligible for reinstatement to the program.

For more information on the current student health insurance policy, medical leave policy and procedures, or about waving the health insurance coverage, please visit the Student Health Services website
