Program Policies

Program Requirements

Successful completion of the program requires earning at least 24 units of approved course work at WUSTL with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Students who meet the completion criteria are eligible for a cover letter and a completion milestone will be added to your official transcript. All courses taken as part of the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program must be taken for letter grades, except for courses offered only on a pass/fail basis.

Appropriate coursework includes prerequisites needed to apply to professional school and upper-level biology courses that are relevant to human or animal biology. Coursework that does not meet those criteria must be approved by an advisor, in advance, to count toward program completion. Courses are typically taken during the evening and are available in fall, spring, and summer terms. Day courses at higher tuition rates are also available to students. Please speak with an academic advisor about the potential advantages of enrolling in one of the lab science sequences during the summer and, in general, before registering for classes.

Students generally begin their studies in the fall or the summer and complete the program within two years. Exceptional students may be able to complete the program in 12 months beginning in the summer. Usually this is possible only when at least one of the core lab science sequences has been completed prior to entering the program. Students are limited to a three-year period to complete the program, and may take up to 45 units total while enrolled in the post-baccalaureate program. Those who wish to continue their post-baccalaureate premedical studies beyond three calendar years may do so as non-degree seeking students. Students who do not enroll in any course work in the program for a span of one academic year or more will be required to reapply if they wish to return.

Cover Letter Eligibility

To qualify for a cover letter from the program, students must be in good academic standing (>3.2 GPA) and successfully complete at least 18 units of coursework at Washington University by the end of the spring semester that precedes the opening of the professional school application cycle and be registered for their 24th unit to be successfully completed no later than summer of the same year.

Students who take coursework at another academic institution after beginning the post-baccalaureate premedical program at Washington University will lose eligibility for a cover letter from the program. Exceptions to this rule are allowed in extenuating circumstances, and must be approved by a program advisor in advance.
