The James L. Sweatt Scholarship is a competitive merit scholarship for students who plan to enroll in the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical (PBPM) Program at Washington University in St. Louis. Students awarded this scholarship will receive $5,000 toward tuition for one academic year. The scholarship is renewable for a second year if the recipient remains in good academic standing.

To be considered for the James L. Sweatt Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be admitted into the Post-Baccalaureate Premedical Program.
  • Complete the Sweatt Scholarship Application (this form).
  • Have earned a minimum 3.4 cumulative undergraduate GPA.
  • Provide two letters of recommendation.
  • Submit an essay (addressing why diversity in the healthcare workforce matters).
  • Undergo an interview with members of the College of Arts & Sciences staff.

Scholarship Policies

1. Scholarship recipients must remain in good academic standing (placement on probation of any kind warrants the removal of the scholarship).

2. Scholarship awards can be applied only to courses relevant to the PBPM program.

3. Scholarship awards cover tuition only. Lab fees, late fees, books, and other expenses are not covered by this scholarship.

4. Scholarship recipients must attain a passing grade in all coursework to remain fully eligible for scholarships in the subsequent semester.

  • Failing a course will jeopardize the student’s eligibility for a scholarship in the subsequent semester. Student regains full eligibility only after successfully passing all courses in a given semester.
  • Withdrawing from a course may also impact a student’s eligibility for a scholarship in the subsequent semester. Student regains full eligibility only after successfully passing all courses in a given semester.

5. Washington University Employees are not eligible for this scholarship.
